How to Write a Goodbye Card

Retirement, relocation, or termination are only three of the countless reasons a co-worker may say goodbye to his associates. While the Department of Labor reports that it is impossible to predict the exact number of times a person will change careers over the course of a lifetime, career switches have definitely become more frequent in the Internet Age than they were in decades past, when it was not unusual to hold a single job for one's entire career. If someone you work with is leaving and you need to bid farewell to a co-worker, writing a thoughtful goodbye card is an excellent way to do it.

How to Write a Goodbye Card

1 Pick out a blank card that has interesting cover art. Write a relevant quote on the inside of the card. This quote can be funny, inspiring, or thoughtful. There are website that can be accessed for quotations relevant for all sorts of occasions.

2 Pass the card around to all of your co-workers at least a week in advance of your associate's departure. This ensures that no one will miss out on signing the card due to a sick day or short vacation. Have each co-worker write a farewell note in a different pen color inside the card. Ask for a small monetary donation from each co-worker that signs the farewell card.

3 Purchase a gift certificate with the monies donated by your co-workers. Place the gift certificate into the card. The card should be redeemable at one of your associate's favorite restaurants or retail stores. This is a great way to show appreciation for your co-worker in a tangible way.

4 Seal the card and give it to your co-worker on the day he or she is leaving. Have everyone gather around while the card is opened, so that everyone can gain the closure they need as the associate moves on to another location.
